Aloha! GaiaYoga Gardens began in 2003. We are half-way between the eastern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii and the “hippie town” of Pahoa, right next to the 2018 lava flow! It is an 18-acre Permaculture homestead, off-grid intentional community, tropical food forest, and sanctuary for pioneering sustainable and holistic consciousness and culture.
Our overall mission is to “heal, activate, and live our holistic hearts in multi-generational bonded community.” In the last 20+ years around 1000 people have stayed here for days to years. We have 4 full members (permanent residents who are financially invested in the religious non-profit that owns the land) and 4 people in their membership process, moving towards full investment. Our population has ebbed and flowed over the years, ranging from as little as 5 adults and 2 children up to 32 adults and 4 children.
Some of our core values and practices included Nonviolent Communication as taught by Marshall Rosenberg, shadow work processes that we have integrated from The ManKind Project, life approaches shared through The Network For New Culture, Permaculture, embodied spirituality, maximizing local and raw food, and developing a clan and heart based foundation for our lives (as opposed to an isolated nuclear family and mind based reality which we all came out of.)
We are the first generation of people leaving the dominant culture. We did not learn to live the way we are intending to live in our childhoods, in fact, we learned to live the opposite of it in many ways. We are unlearning, healing, relearning, and moving towards mastery as fast as we can — which is much slower than we wish.
If you want to integrate your divine soul nature, your primal humanity, your animal self, your tender-feeling heart, and do it that sacred work with others who are devoted to creating a holistic and beautiful world and home together, then we invite you to explore our way of life, read our books, visit our website (www.gaiayoga.org), listen to our music, and come stay with us and join us in cultivating a truly sustainable and holistic consciousness and culture.
We are open for people to stay with us doing work-trade, eco-renting, or a combination. We welcome people for short, medium, and long-term stays, and life-long membership. We offer one primary transformational/education opportunity which we call The GaiaYoga Immersion Experience. It is presently a 21-day process with 25+ 2.5-hour classes on all different aspects of living sustainably and holistically and removing the obstacles to doing so.
This is not easy work, but there is nothing else we see worth doing!
I/We look forward to connecting and hopefully co-creating the beautiful world we know is true deep in our hearts. We’ve gone through an immense amount of “in the trenches” learning and are confident we can cultivate the world we want – we just need more devoted folks to bring it to thriving life.
Sincerely, Ano Hanamana for GaiaYoga Gardens
